The Wayne County Wildcats will advance to their very first Class-A TSSAA BlueCross Championship game in Cookeville after a convincing 33-0 rout of West Carroll Friday night before a standing room only crowd.

 

The Wildcats struck early in the first quarter on a 69-yard pass from Austin Rice to Haden Skelton with 8:57 showing on the clock giving Wayne County a 7-0 lead and the half would end with the Wildcats up by that 7-0 margin.

 

The third quarter would be big for the home team, QB Austin Rice scores for the Wildcats with 4:15 to play on a 22-yard run and the Wayne County led 13-0. With 1:05 left in the third Haden Skelton scores for the second time in the game on a 4-yard run and the Cats took a commending lead 19-0 and with 10.5 seconds left Zack Clayton intercepted a War Eagles pass at their 22 and took it to pay dirt, their 19th point in the quarter, giving Wayne County a 26-0 commending lead going into the final quarter.

 

In the fourth the Wildcat defense kept the pressure on West Carroll’s offense while adding another score set up by a 51-yard run by Clint Bulter to the War Eagle 11. On the very next play Nick Horton goes over right tackle eleven-yards making the score 33-0 with 7:55 to play.

 

The Wildcats run their record to (13-0) and will now face South Pittsburg (12-2) who defeated Gordonsville 32-14 in the Class-A title game next Friday. South Pittsburg scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to pull from a 14-14 halftime deadlock.

The Columbia State Community College Lady Chargers won their fifth game in a row Friday with a 70-61 conference victory over Cleveland State. The Lady Chargers continue to get fantastic play from first-year player Kelva Atkins. The Stem, NC freshman led the way with 23 points. CSCC moved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

The Chargers suffered their second conference loss falling to the Cougars 86-80. The Chargers were led by DeVante James with 17. Greg McGee had 14 and DeAngelo Williams added 10.

Both teams will journey up the road for a Saturday meeting with Chattanooga State on Saturday.

UPDATE Sunday:

The Lady Tigers defeated the Columbia State Lady Chargers 90-79 suffering their first loss of the year. The Chargers fall by two, 83-81.

The Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raider baseball squad got three of middle Tennessee’s best players. Spring Hill’s Dathan Prewett, Columbia Lions Heath Slatton and Mt Pleasant Tiger Garrett Ring all signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Coach Steve Peterson.

Raiders shortstop Prewett led his team as a leadoff batter with a .484 average with five home runs and 62 RBIs. Columbia’s Slatton enjoyed a great junior season with the Lions. Heath earned all-state, midstate and district honors as a pitcher and outfielder. He batted .395 with seven homers and 43 RBIs.

Tiger Garrett Ring had a great year for Mt Pleasant last season. He received all-district honors compiling 76 strikeouts, just 18 walks producing an earn run average of 0.26.

Coach Peterson said all the players will be fun to watch and he looks forward to seeing them grow as a Blue Raider.
