Columbia State Sweeps Wallace State, On A Seven Game Winning Streak!

The Columbia State Charger baseball team improved to 7-3 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Wallace State Tuesday at Dave Hall Field. CSCC led 7-5 through six innings in game one only to have the Lions plate two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at seven.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh batter Scott Gibson strikes out, but in doing so Lions’ catcher Tim Zurrer dropped the ball. His throw to first bounced by the first baseman allowing Gibson to reach. He then steels second. Jordan Parris is hit by a pitch. With one out and runners at first and second Preston Carter flairs a perfectly placed single over the second baseman’s head scoring Gibson, giving CSCC the win 8-7 and their sixth win in a row.

Game two was a different story as Columbia State responded in the bottom of the first after Wallace State took the lead 3-0 in the opening frame. CSCC scored three of their own on two hits as sophomore Derrick (DJ) Armstrong tripled to the wall in right scoring Dustin Delgado and Jesse Gavigan.  Lucas Pippenger knocked in the tying run on a sac-fly to center scoring Armstrong. The first inning magic was just the beginning for Delgado and Armstrong.

The Chargers answered the bell once again the the second inning. Leadoff batter Jon Reagan singles, Donald Nolan doubles to the right field wall. Preston Carter towers a fly to center which scores Reagan and the Chargers would take the lead for good. With no outs Delgado connects on his second hits of the game, an infield hits scoring Nolan. Gavigan singles to right plating Delgado. DJ Armstrong had a breakout game. His next at bat would be enormous as he blasts the Chargers first round-tripper over the left center field wall driving in Gavigan and the Charger led 8-3.

Wallace added a run in the third making the score 8-4, but Columbia State scattered four more hits in the fourth which included another triple by Armstrong, this time with bases loaded and CSCC upped their lead to 12-4. That total stood until the sixth inning. Wallace State tallied four off of just one hit as CSCC committed two error and also hit three batters in the frame. Columbia State led 12-8 after 5-½.
