Board of Control voted to approve a Pitch Count Rule for the sport of baseball. It will go into effect this season.

The NFHS Baseball Rules Committee passed a policy which states that all state associations must develop its own pitching restriction policy based on the number of pitches thrown during a game to afford pitchers a required rest period between pitching appearances. The Board voted to approve the following Pitch Count regulations for the sport of baseball. GENERAL GUIDELINES: 1. Make sure properly warmed up prior to any throwing activity. Use proper equipment to aid in the warm up. (Surgical tubing, etc…) 2. Make sure a proper dynamic and static stretching plan is followed prior to throwing. 3. Educate pitchers on proper mechanics and techniques of throwing. 4. Monitor for signs of mechanical breakdown and fatigue. 5. Take immediate action if a pitcher complains of pain. 6. Consult a trainer/doctor/ trained coach upon completion of game pitching activity. 7. Put in place and follow a prescribed post pitching rehabilitation program. 8. Make every effort to avoid pitching a player in multiple games on the same day. GUIDELINES: 1. Cannot use the same pitcher three (3) days in a row regardless of number of pitches thrown. 2. If pitchers hit their END number, they are allowed to finish the batter in the box regardless of END number. 3. Highly recommended that a coach check with a coach on the opposing team between each half inning to make sure pitch counts are in congruent. ( the same ) 4. Home team would be final correct count. 5. Both teams would sign documentation pitch form at the end of each game. 6. The pitch count will apply to a player who pitches. JV pitch count and high school varsity pitch count would be linked together. Example – Pitcher A pitches Varsity on Monday 45 pitches, not allowed to pitch JV on Tuesday. 7. The pitch count applies to regular season and postseason.

A form tracking each pitch must be kept and signed by the opposing coach following each game.

UPDATE: 8/7/16

One Bad Inning/Rowan Pitching Dooms Post 19!

Columbia Post 19 had their backs to the wall having lost the opener in the American Legion Southeast Regional, to stay alive they would have to beat that same team Rowan NC Saturday.

Trailing 2-0 Columbia took the lead in the bottom of the fourth 3-2, but that was all they could produce as the Rowan Post 342 pitchers kept Post 19 hitters in check and in the top of the fifth Rowan put the game away as they sent 12 batters to the plate scoring 7 runs taking a commanding lead 9-3 winning the game be the same score.  Tennessee had just three hits, while Rowan County pounded out 15.

Post 342 will play South Carolina, a team they beat in their 2nd game of the tournament 8-1. Rowan needs just one win to advance to the 2016 World Series. The game is Sunday at 4:30 est. for the championship.

Columbia Post 19 lives to play another game. Friday in an elimination game as Steven Armstrong hurled seven shutout innings in a 9-0 victory over West Virginia at the 2016 American Legion SE Regional being play in Asheboro, No Carolina. Tennessee (40-6) advances and will play Rowan County Saturday at 7:30 p.m.EST.

In Friday’s game against West Virginia Post 19’s Boone Sweeney 4-5 3R for Post 19 and Bryce Giles 3-6 2 RBI,  Konnor Ambrose 2-3.

Head Coach Scott Beasley told The Courier Tribune “We have the mentality of someone is going to go home every game and make sure it’s not you.” Steven Armstrong gave up just four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. “He was very good today,” Beasley said. “His big problem has been location and today he located well. Sixty percent of his pitches today were for strikes and that’s a good percentage.”

Post 19 now has a rematch with Rowan County Post 342 a team they lost to 8-2 in each teams opening game. Game time Saturday 6:30PM central time. You can listen online by going to wkxr.com.
