The two teams fans have been talking about in Class A baseball Columbia Academy and Loretto will meet for the 2018 TSSAA Class A Championship Friday at 11am at MTSU’s Reese Smith Field.
In their journey Columbia Academy did not blink. The Bulldogs won three in a row outscoring their opponents 24 to 3, beating Gordonsville 5-0, Union City 6-2 and Greenback 13-1. CA’s ace on the mound William Huey pitched game one going 6 & 2/3 innings striking out 11 and combined with reliever Andrew Logsdon for a no-hitter. Jacob Perry and Jay Morgan saw action on the hill in the 6-2 win over Union City Perry allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in his 5 & 1/3 innings. In the 13-1 blowout of Greenback Blake Kincaid took the win in the six inning contest.
Defending state champion Loretto had a little tougher trip through their bracket. The Mustangs had a battle with Trinity Christian Academy losing the opening semifinal game Thursday 5-2, even though they out hit the Lions 7 to 3. Mustang Head Coach Gary Lamm to TSN thangs changed when starting pitcher Jacob James fouled a pitch off his foot.
Game two was a different story. The Mustang starting pitcher Jake Jackson worked the plate and maintained control through the first four innings holding the Lions hitless. In the meantime the Loretto batters put together a fifth inning scoring 5, highlighted by a two-run homer by Ryan Weathers. The 5-0 score held til the sixth. Trinity pushed across two runs to trail 5-2. Loretto answered in the bottom half plating 3 Mustangs. With 2 out Weathers singles and steals second. Franklin homers to center scoring Weathers followed by a homer by Jackson and game on 8-2. The Lions would add three more in the 7th, but not enough as the Mustangs win 8-5.
